Where is Sierra Leone?

Summary
Sierra Leone is located in the West Coast of Africa, a former British colony. According to historical sources the Limba were the first tribe known to inhabited Sierra Leone at least 2,500 years ago. Around the 15th century other indigenous African Peoples – Bulom, Temene and Mande-speaking people arrived. The region was a later raided by Europeans for slaves and ravaged by wars amongst African clans’ leaders. In the later part of the 18th century the British used the territory to resettle freed slaves and African American refugees. Later Sierra Leone became a British Crown colony in 1808 and gained independence in April 1961.
The country has dense tropical rainforest partially isolated the region from other West African cultures, and it became a refuge for peoples escaping violence and Jihads.
The original name was “Sara Loya” named by Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra, who mapped the region in 1462. Freetown the capital of Sierra Leone was established by English humanitarians Williams Wilberforce and others who fought for the abolition of the slave trade. As the name implies Freetown was named for all freed slaves to settle and make the place a home. Freetown has a good natural harbour for ships to shelter and replenish drinking water.
